3 in a row: Cork Minor Ladies beat Galway to Win the All-Ireland

Published by Alan Gould on

The second game to be played by Cork on Monday the 7th August at O’Connor Park, Tullamore were the Minor Ladies Football Team in the All-Ireland final against Galway.

Cork were the Victors on the day in outstanding fashion winning by 5-11 to 1-4

The rebels started the game from the throw in on the attack but it was Galway who opened the scoring with a point from Lara Finnegan.

O Leary opens the scoring for Cork. 7th minute. -1 pt a piece. But with only so little gone in the first some players seem nervous still and have yet to settle.

The game progressed point for point when finally a goal for Cork with O Leary yet again… Cork lead 1-2 to -2 pts at this stage mid way through the second half with the sun shining down on O’Connor Park.

With 8 minutes to go in the first half 1-4 to -2 pts Cork ahead by 5

Thinking it would end the half with a tight score Saoirse Noonan scored two cracking goals to finish the first half Cork leading  3-5 to -2 pts

Second Half

Both the rebels and Galway back out for the second half with Galway starting strong but the solid Cork back line of Katie Horgan, Clare o Shea & Sarah Leahy doing very well and not giving anything to Galway.

Ten minutes in Galway made changes to try and remedy a comeback and get some energy back into the side. But it was Cork to open the scoring with Jenny Brewdinan.

From then on the Rebels scored one after the other with Aishling Healy scoring within thirty seconds of coming on, Saoirse Noonan scoring another point and Sadhbh O Leary gets a cracker for Cork inside the post to beat Laura Hession in goal. And then followed with another point.

The Rebels are unstoppable and it seems certain that they are receiving their three in a row.

Galway did get what seemed like a second wind with Ciara McCarthy who came on from the bench scoring a goal to pass Sarah Murphy for the first time of the game. 4-10 to 1-3 with 5 minutes to go.

But it was short lived with Aisling healy passes to Saoirse Noonan to get her hat trick.

The Rebels are Champions for the third finishing the game in style winning by 5-11 1-4

Also Player of the game went to Saoirse Noonan who really showed her quality among a team full of stars.

Congratulations to the Ladies Minors in what I can only describe as one of the best football games I’ve seen in a while from a Cork team.
