The POA – Prison Officers Association has released a statement describing the arson attack as

“Deeply disturbing and sinister”

Jim Mitchell the spokesperson for the POA

said the second attack on a prison officers car in the area in 2 years just highlights the difficult nature of the job.

Forensic results are pending as the Gardaí conduct the ongoing investigation.

The incident is one of four arson attacks in the blarney area in recent years.

October 2008 Blarney Garda Station was nearly destroyed over night after an arson attack. The Gardaí moving into nearby temporary offices were also targeted in June 2009.

A gatso van had a petrol bomb thrown into it in the Tower area on August 27th 2009.

A prison officer’s car was also targeted in a similar attack in May 2015 outside her home in the Blarney area.

Residents in the area describe the attack as outrageous and hope those involved for the cowardly attack are brought to justice.
